Doğancan Ülker

Bundan yaklaşık bir ay önce tek başıma Bursa ‘ya gidiyordum. Otobüste cam kenarına oturmuş, patlaya patlaya geçecek olan iki saatin ızdırabını hafifletmenin yollarını düşünürken yanıma bir adam oturdu. Ben beş on dakika camdan baktım. O da dışarı bakıyordu. Otobüs yeni kalkmışken bana aniden “Konuşmayı sever misiniz?” dedi. Bana mı dedi diye düşündüm. Evet bana demişti. “Biraz” diye karşılık verdim. O da ben konuşmayı severim isterseniz yol boyunca birlikte konuşabiliriz dedi. Şaşırdım. Genellikle bu tip konuşmalar “yolculuk nereye?” diye sorularak başlar diye düşünürken ” ‘Yolculuk nereye’ gibi klişe bir soru sormak istemedim kapıda Bursa yazıyor zaten” dedi. Bu cevap hoşuma gitmişti.

Yol boyunca konuştuk. Öyle ki iki saatin nasıl geçtiğini anlamadım. Kendisi Balıkesir Fen Lisesi ‘nde İngilizce öğretmeniymiş. Ben de (maalesef) bir öğrenci olduğum için konuşacak çok ortak yönümüz vardı. ÖSS üzerine uzun sohbetler yaptık. Daha sonra inmeden önce kendisinden e-posta adresini aldım. O günden sonra bir iki kez postalaştık. O konuşmamızı bir yazı haline getirmiş. Onu burada yayınlamak istedim :

A NİCE JOURNEY

I had two alternatives when I sat together with a
young man who was continuously looking out of the bus
window. Either I would be silent through the journey
from Izmit to Bursa or I would make an attempt to
start a conversation.
I preferred to ask a question to start a
conversation. “Would you like to talk?” I said. “With
pleasure” he replied. After asking some personal
questions for an introduction we talked about several
useful topics which I enjoyed a lot.
Education, friendship, generation gap, freedom of
speech, are the ones that I clearly remember now. Oh
my God! I enjoyed the talk a lot. An Anatolian High
School Student at 10th grade with so humanitarian, so
satisfying, so open-minded ideas.
He reinforced my positive expectations from the
future of my country and the world. I gave him my
e-mail address so he would send me his web site link
and his writings. I’m planning to contact him through
his web site. I’d like my students to contact him as
well. I’m sure they have got a lot of things to share.
They must come together to unite their mind power and
do something for themselves, for their country and all
the people in the world.

I’m hopeful, so hopeful. I believe, I believe…
